4 Things For Dog Lovers To Know About Beagles

By Robin Setser

To say that beagles are popular would be an understatement. Pet owners love them for a number of reasons, ranging from their charming appearances to their generally warm dispositions. How much do you know about these dogs, though? No matter how much you may like them, there exists a bevy of facts that tend to go under the radar. Here are just 4 that will help you admire this breed even more.

The popularity of beagles cannot be understated, especially when you look at media as a whole. Snoopy from the "Peanut" comic strip is a great example, and may be the most recognizable. If you're a fan of more recent media, animation in particular, Courage the Cowardly Dog has been classified as a beagle as well. Examples like these can't be overlooked, but there is more to be learned about beagles, as companies such as Assisi Animal Health can attest.

Second, beagles are known for being an old dog breed. As a matter of fact, they go back so far in history that it's unclear as to how they originated. What we do know, though, is that they go back as far as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. During these periods, beagles were dogs that could help hunters track down their targets. Needless to say, this purpose has changed as hunting is less of a necessity in the modern age.

Third, beagles have a keen sense of smell, more so than other dog breeds. For those that don't know, the brain cells of a beagle are actually attached to their nose, meaning that they survey their environment through their sense of smell. Have you ever seen a dog pick up the trace of an odor and attempt to track it down, even to the point where they ignore everything else? This is largely due to this trait, which should be noted as well.

Lastly, the word "beagle" means "loudmouth" in French. While this may seem like an insult, it's actually anything but that. Many people don't know that beagles have some of the strongest vocal cords of dogs in general. Have you ever heard this breed of dog bark or yelp so loud that you have to cover your ears? This is a direct result of their strong vocal cords, which stands as another takeaway for new and longtime pet owners alike.
