Katahdin is one of the most popular breed of sheep in existence today. Since its creation, it has become very popular, being raised in all the continents of the world. Its many attractive attributes are the main lure for people who keep them. Mostly, people rare them for meat, but others specialize in breeding. Here are facts regarding katahdins for sale.

When buying one for breeding purposes then the health of the sheep should be the main concern. It would be a big mistake to start breeding with an unhealthy flock since it will result to failure. A healthy sheep is always alert and stays bright about its surroundings. These animals are meant to stay together since they have a flocking instinct and if one notices an individual sheep moving away from the flock then it has health issues.

Sheep can be made unhealthy from a number of medical conditions. For instance, signs of disease include, respiratory problems, sore mouth lesions, pink eyes, presence of abscesses, limping, and poor body condition. Sheep with such symptoms are not suitable for breeding and should not be purchased. If one finds a breeder whose a majority of the sheep have these signs, it is advisable to buy from a different source.

Like stated earlier, sheep can have many defects and medical conditions that make them unsuitable for purchase when the intention is to breed. One aspect to consider is the mouth. In a health animal, the upper and lower jaws are properly aligned. Incisor teeth flush with the upper jaw as well. This can be noticed by simply opening the mouth of the animal. One should do this carefully to avoid being bitten.

It is a common thing to find sheep with a longer upper or lower jaw. This is an inherited defect passed from the parents to their offspring. When the sheep has a short jaw then it will have a hard time grazing on short grass. On the other hand, a small difference in jaw length is not an issue and is acceptable.

The teeth condition of the katahdin is dependent on the land they live on and the diet they are fed. Animals feeding on coarse and rough diets are known to grind away their teeth faster than those commonly feeding on soft pastures. Incisors in sheep have less importance compared to molars. One can feel the outside of the jaw to evaluate the condition of molars.

Feet and legs are also of great importance. If the animal is healthy and in good condition, it should have straight legs. The legs should be set squarely on the body. If there are any defects in the legs and feet, the sheep is likely to break down during difficult production conditions. Such sheep should not be bought for breeding.

The most important factor to consider is the breeder one is getting the sheep from. One should consider the market reputation of the breeder, the years they have operated in this area and their record. One should also confirm that the breeder is licensed to operate.
