Sometimes when it comes to pet ownership we just want to go out of the box and get something exotic or different. When it comes to cats the same can also be said, we just want something other than an ordinary tabby. This breed is created when crossing a domestic short hair and a Geoffroy's Cat, which is a close relative of the South American ocelot. This breed is hard to come by for there are differences in chromosomal pairs of wild cats and domestic ones. Thus the Safari coming about is a miracle at best. The first successful breeding of for this cat occurred in the 1970s.

This breed can be quite expensive due to their difficulty to breed, especially with first generation or F1 cats. This is because the male Geoffroy's Cat may sometimes attack and kill the female Domestic shorthair. With successful breeding they are slightly larger than the Geoffroy's Cat but they also have a much docile and calmer temperament and are described as delightfully gentle creatures.

Only 70 registered owners are recorded by TIC as owning one is quite difficult, due to difficulty of acquisition. They are considered as the "Rolls Royce of Exotic Cats" and will have the same distinction as bengals, Savannah and Chausi cats. They are also all classified as exotics, meaning a pairing was done between a wild subject and a domestic one.

They do look very sleek and long, making them tall, and also very svelte. Their colors range according to the region that they come from and can range anywhere from shades of deep orange to black and silver grey.

This is a cat that is quite easy to maintain however, and many will say it is almost a feed and forget cat. They do not require too much attention and care compared to other cats and can be fed normal cat food. Owners however, prefer to give it a special diet mix of food consisting of raw meat.

This cat is very intelligent and also naturally curious. Due to its wild ancestry it is also very active and highly curious, which can get it into trouble sometimes. This is a cat that is more suited to very active owners.

When it has been properly socialized its temperament can be said to be quite remarkable, and almost like that of the dog. In fact, many will say that this is the feline version of the canine. It is very loyal to the family it stays with and very watchful of others. It can learn simple to complex commands and also suffers pout bouts if left out of activities. With proper nutrition and care it can live to a fairly long 20 years or more.
