Canine First Aid By Passionate Pet Vet

By Roger Morgan

Emergencies are normal for pets as they are for human beings. Some of the situations that may be regarded as emergency include when your dog has swallowed a poisonous substance, is involved in an accident or has suffered heat stroke. There are many other unique situations which call for canine first aid that saves the condition of the pet from deterioration. To arrest such situations before they become fatal, here are expert tips.

Watch the behavior of your dog keenly because you will need to report that to the vet. It may be having difficulty in breathing, appear depressed and reluctant to move, bloody or even weak. When you make a call to the vet, he will need to understand these symptoms in order to provide a diagnosis. Check whether the pet is in pain and where the discomfort is coming from.

First ensure that you are safe and other people around are also safe. Animals in distress tend to be aggressive and will bite anyone who tries to touch them. Maintain your calm and assess the situation. If you panic, the animal will pick up the same reaction and may turn violent and be impossible to control.

Do not take any action until you get directions from your vet. The phone numbers of your nearest vet should be close by all the time. The information you have been gathering through observation or witnessing is what you pass to the veterinary once the call goes through. In the absence of the vet, staff at the clinic will issue intervention directions to enable you manage the condition until the doctor arrives. A pen and paper should be nearby to enable you take instructions.

The most common risk with dogs is biting. The nature of emergency will make it easy to be bitten. There is a muzzle to prevent them from biting. The muzzle is fastened behind the ears. The muzzle is only avoided if the dog has difficulty with breathing. A thick towel can restrain the small sized canines before the arrival of the vet.

Human medicine should not be administered to dogs. Even medicine whose use is unknown should not be administered. Only a trained vet has the permission to administer medicine. Any other person or medicine must be avoided. Further more, medicine for bee sting is different from when an animal is injured in an accident. You should only administer medicine when directed by a qualified vet.

Restrict the movement of your dog until the arrival of the doctor. The aim is to prevent the danger from escalating. In such delicate instances like broken bones, the fracture may worsen the situation. Place the canine on a board for easy transfer to the doctor. Get to the vet in the shortest time possible for quick medical attention.

Always have a pet first aid box at home. Some of the items the box should contain include bandages, surgical tapes, sterile absorbent gauze and a thick towel. Elizabethan collar and scissors or a blade should also be included. Remember that emergency care is only meant to arrest the situation. Get to a vet as fast as possible.
