Shetland sheepdog is probably one of the most popular breeds. This lovely, affectionate and loyal dog is really special creature, and his characteristic appearance makes him recognizable all over the world. These lovely dogs come in different color variations, and, thanks to their popularity, you will probably find Sable Sheltie puppies for sale somewhere near to your home.

So, as it was said, there are two basic coat colors, but three different basic color variations, Sable, bicolor and tricolor. The first one has recognizable red, reddish brown, golden or mahogany coat with black overcoat, bicolor has black coat, and tricolor comes in different color variations of two basic colors and white. It might be confusing, because they all have white areas. Every dog carries two color genes.

One separate gene is called Merle, and it is independent from those two basic color genes. Carriers of a Merle gene have patterned coats and sometimes blue eyes. It's not allowed to combine two Merle carriers together, because the puppies are often born blind and with hearing problems. Merle gene is quite obvious when puppies are still young, but it might be hard to visually determine this gene when the dog is older.

Sable is the most popular variation. It can be dark red, mahogany red, golden brown or in any other shade, with large white areas and more or less distinctive black overcoat. When the puppy is still very young, he doesn't have so much white areas, but it will change as he grows older. He will probably be up to 41 cm high and with weight of up to 12 kg, and these are average numbers for both males and females.

They might look larger thanks to their beautiful, long, thick, feathered coats. Regular grooming is really important, to avoid mats and hairs all over your home. These dogs shed heavily, and you need to comb and brush them to keep this under control. Trimming private parts is also recommendable, for sanitary reasons.

When it comes to their health, these dogs might have various health problems, just like other popular purebreds. It is essential to find a good vet and take your dog for regular checkups. Dependable breeder will issue a health clearance for your new puppy, to make sure his parents were not genetic diseases carriers. Regular vaccination and vet checkups are necessary.

As it was said before, this is a very special dog. He is sensitive, gentle and intelligent, alert, active and responsive. He has to be well socialized early and requires calm and gentle owner and peaceful living environment. He will not react very well to loud noises, yelling, or anything too exciting. He might bark extensively in strange situations.

Clever, responsive and interested in learning, Sheltie is just perfect for large families and gentle owners who appreciate peace and quiet life. Toddlers are often too loud and too much for any dog, and might scare him. He won't become aggressive or something, but might bark or become nervous. Loyal and nice to all people, but still alert and playful, this really is one unique dog, a friend for life.
