The Importance Of Canine SAR

By Amanda Powell

Looking for lost items or people in the bush can be difficult especially when covering a large area. Canine SAR is very helpful in such situation as it speeds up the process. Trained dogs with experienced handlers is the best as it supplements human resources. Below are a number of points on how these animals have been used ever since time.

Before the animal is set out to work, coaching is a must where the canine will acquire a number of tactics to use while working. They are in a position to smell the scent of the subject over wider coverage. This is due to the particles that are emitted by the subject transported by the wind. Their work is to follow it to find out where it is being emitted from.

Studies have shown that they can cover a wider area. One trained dog is able to cover an area that fifty personnel would. This makes it easier, faster and cheaper. Effective deployment, however, requires a good comprehension of the task ahead, the positives and the negatives associated.

The trained animals are capable of working either during day or night time. They, however, are helpful during the night when the circumstance is crucial such as finding an injured individual who is missing. They will go for the search when the other personnel are regrouping. The concentration of scent is high at night due to the still air making it easy in locating. The dogs can also see without any difficulty at night and hear sounds from far away.

They are also best during bad weather. It does not matter whether it is windy, sunny or rainy. Although strong winds, snow, and heavy rains may destroy any traces, there is still scent emission. They will, therefore, follow this whether dead or alive to point out where the subject is. They can work under any given circumstance including rural farms, in or around houses, snowfield, and heavy bushes and so on.

The animals are also adapted to any transportation their handlers use. This may be helicopters, snowmobiles, boats, light aircraft and so forth. There are a number of them which are trained to be lowered from a helicopter by a winch. During missions or when there is no work, the handler will not separate from the dog. They prefer camping out when the accommodations they get will not permit animals.

Not all kinds of dogs will be allowed to undergo coaching. There are a number of attributes looked into during the selection. This includes the age; they ought to be at least eighteen months and above. They should be well built with good health. Some of the breeds that will do well include golden retrievers, Rottweiler, giant schnauzers, German shepherd, and Doberman.

There are three kinds of missions for the animals namely trailing, air scent and following ground disturbances. They are useful in helping law enforcement find answers to a crime scene, in drowning situations, collapsed buildings, earthquakes and much more. Such animals can be relied on when the situation is tough.
