Everyone you know in your life has a pet and you are thinking perhaps that you want one too. You saw a dachshund puppy for sale sign earlier and you are thinking that this might be the right dog for you at this time. Before you do go out and buy that dog however, do read on more about this particular breed before making a commitment.

Prepare to spend anywhere from two hundred dollars upwards to around one thousand dollars for a puppy. Prices differ because of differences in puppy ancestry, the reputation and reliability of the specific kennel selling, and also local and regional demand and supply conditions for the breed.

Hunting was all the rage in seventeenth century Europe and they needed a hunting dog that could chase down prey all the way down holes and burrows. Thus the dachshund, or badger hound, was bred and developed. Its sausage like body and fairly short and stumpy legs allow it to crawl down burrows and holes where hares, rabbits, badgers and possums usually run into to hide. As this dog is really a hunting hound, it is still classified as such in international canine registers today.

Upon its maturity it will stand around eight to nine inches when measuring from the shoulder to the ground and it will weigh anywhere from sixteen to thirty two pounds. The breed is a small breed and thus may be prone to small dog syndrome as the case may be.

For small dogs it has been observed that they will exhibit behavior known as small dog syndrome. This is a set of behaviors that they perform to compensate for their small size. They can exhibit hyper behavior like jumping and barking and sometimes overtly aggressive behavior. This aggressive behavior is more amplified in the dachshund as it does have hunting hound genes. This breed has been known to bite strangers one of five times and also has been known to snap at their own masters. Given such behavior, they are known to be the second most aggressive canine in the world.

On the other hand, despite their aggressiveness at times, this breed will most of the time make good family pets and are known to be good with children. Watch out though as they will have issues with animals and people that are outside of the immediate family. They will also tend to bark and howl a lot and thus you will have to get used to it.

This particular breed has legendary wanderlust. What this means is that if it has the opportunity to walk around its own, it will do so and probably it will never return. Thus if you want to keep it in a yard, it is best to have it fenced in or on a leash at least. Many do opt to keep this dog inside due to its small size, but you should make this decision with a bit of caution. By keeping the dog indoors a majority of the time will cause it to be obese and unhealthy. Thus when keeping it inside, ensure that it has a good balanced diet and that it also gets plenty of exercise.

In conclusion, the aforementioned items for consideration prior to your purchase and commitment should be more than helpful.. Should you wish you should also look at other factors such as important health issues and perhaps even grooming tips that you should know about. In becoming a responsible pet owner it will always pay to have as much information as possible.
