How To Help Your Dog Handle The Dog Cone Collar In The Best Way Possible

By Joyce Bell

It can be quite stressful for both you and your pet when it gets sick. This is especially when it has to wear a dog cone collar. This accessory is useful in preventing your pet from harming itself further when it has a wound. There are a couple of things you can do to make it much easier for your pet to handle the accessory since it will have to wear it for some time.

One of the major challenges your pet will face is when they have to feed or drink water. This is because it will be hard for them to get their heads into their feeding bowls due to the size of the choker. One of the ways you can handle this is by getting your pet a larger feeding bowl to use. The bowl should be able to accommodate the size of the choker. It is also advisable to spread some newspapers on the floor around the feeding bowl, considering that the eating process will be quite messy when the animal has the choker on.

Consider taking off the chocker when your pet is not feeding. However, you have to closely supervise him, so that he does not end up scratching himself. Put it back on after he has finished eating or drinking. Alternatively, if you don't have a lot of time to take the chocker on and off, you can just let your pet feed with the chocker on, they will eventually get the hang of it after a couple of tries.

Put the feeding dish into an elevated area. This will prevent your pet from bumping the choker on the floor when feeding. It would also help if you kept the feeding bowl away from the wall or counter tops when eating.

Make adjustments to the bedding of your pet. This is because it will be hard for them to lie down with the accessory on. If having a pillow will make them more comfortable, let them use it. Your pet may also find it more comforting if their bed leans against the wall.

Make it possible for the animal to walk around your house and compound without bumping its head on things. Move away any objects or furniture that will be on its way. You can also lead it around the house, especially when navigating tough areas, such as when it's going through entrances.

Ensure that the choker the animal gets fits. If it is very big, it will be too bulky. If it is too small, it may be quite tight for the dog, therefore uncomfortable.

You have to be really patient with your pet, since the experience of wearing the chocker is not easy for it too. Give him a bit of attention to make sure that he is coping well. You can also give him a couple of treat when he is wearing the collar to make him feel better.
