Vancouver Veterinary Professionals And Practice

By Patricia Miller

Veterinarian is the term used for people who are trained in handling medical diseases that affect animals, both wild and domestic. The colloquial version, vet, is often used instead of the full version of the term. The professionals in this field are also variably referred to as veterinary physicians or surgeons. In Vancouver veterinary means the workplace of a vet.

In most countries the practice of veterinarians as well as the name are usually regulated or protected by the law. That means that unless one is licensed to work as a veterinarian, they cannot use the term or engage in any activities pertaining to the work of vets. As such, it is often a criminal offense for one to refer to themselves as vets or to undertake any activity pertaining to the profession if they are not trained and licensed to do so.

Thomas Browne is responsible for a print in which the term veterinarian first appeared in 1946. The translation of the word from Latin to English means working animals. The use of the term veterinarian is more common in North America and in countries where American English is used. On the contrary, veterinary surgeon predominates countries that belong or belonged to the Commonwealth and British Empire respectively.

Veterinarians work in a number of settings, but more commonly they work in animals hospitals and private clinics. Since these professionals may specialize according to the size and type of animals they treat, those whose focus is in small domestic animals work in clinic or office environments. Those who focus on large livestock like goats, horses, and cattle work on ranches or farms.

These practitioners also work with a team that consists of Veterinarian Technologists and Technicians. The vets supervise this team when working. The team conducts medical tests and handles emergency procedures among several other tasks. Vets are can also be employed in various facilities. Some of these facilities include humane societies, military, wildlife facilities, food safety inspection facilities, diagnostic facilities, animal control facilities, biomedical facilities, and companies involved with production of foods and drugs..

To work in the capacity of a veterinary surgeon in the US, one must have a degree in Veterinary Medicine. DVM is the abbreviation used for the degree in common language. It is mandatory for one to have a pre-veterinary degree in any of the many courses for them to gain admission into doctorate programs. Some of those courses are Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Genetics, Biology, and Physiology. It takes 3-4 years to graduate with a pre-veterinary degree.

The job entails several duties. Some of the major ones include treating and dressing wounds, testing and vaccinating against diseases, prescribing medication, euthanizing animals, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, and examining health conditions. The job also involves operating medical equipment such as x-ray and MRI machines.

Several factors determine how much is earned by a veterinarian. Some of the factors that determine income are area of specialization, employer, location, and experience. Practitioners who are well established in the field and have several years of experience earn more than those joining the field. Similarly, income is higher in some places than others.
